Huck Gee is the professional name of Mark Gee born in 1973 in Newcastle upon Tyne England. He is a contemporary artist illustrator toy maker and designer who has lived in San Francisco since the early 1990s. Gee is best known for creating the iconic Skullhead character which became a cornerstone of the designer toy movement. His style which he calls Bastardized Asian Pop Culture fuses Japanese Edo period aesthetics with Hong Kong street pop art resulting in bold graphic images rendered in crisp lines and flat color blocks. In 2005 he launched the Skullhead Project a collaboration between Kidrobot and Barneys New York where five top fashion designers dressed 12 inch Skullhead figures in miniature versions of their spring collections.
His work has been exhibited in galleries worldwide and in 2007 his Hello My Name Is 8 inch Dunny toy was accepted into the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Gee has also consigned pieces to Christie's auction house cementing his place in the fine art market. In 2018 he co founded Superplastic with Paul Budnitz where he created flagship characters Janky and Guggimon and led collaborations with brands like Gucci Nike Gorillaz and Fortnite. After leaving Superplastic in 2022 he returned to his personal practice focusing on handcrafted art toys and original prints that continue to sell out within seconds online.
