Dave Buonaguidi is a London based artist who has successfully transitioned from a high profile career in advertising to become a major force in the world of limited edition art prints. Known widely by his artist alter ego The Real Hackney Dave, he spent over thirty five years as a creative leader in the advertising industry before turning his full attention to screen printing. Born in London in 1964, Buonaguidi grew up in an Italian household and originally attended art school in the early 1980s where he completed a foundation course and a graphics program. Despite this early training, he spent decades founding and leading major agencies such as St. Luke’s and Karmarama. It was not until 2014, during a period of professional hiatus he calls his gardening year, that he took a one day screen printing workshop at Print Club London which fundamentally shifted his career path.
Since focusing on his practice, The Real Hackney Dave has developed a signature style characterized by bold, often fluorescent typography layered over found objects and vintage materials. His work is heavily influenced by the visual language of propaganda and the democratic nature of pop art. One of his most significant early accomplishments was the creation of the iconic Make Tea Not War poster for the 2003 anti war march in London. This piece has since achieved historic status and is held in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum and is also exhibited at the Imperial War Museum and the Trento Museum of Modern Art.
The artistic output of The Real Hackney Dave is prolific and frequently addresses cultural themes in real time. His portfolio includes several famous pieces that have become staples for collectors of limited edition posters. Notable titles include True Love Never Dies, Norf Sarf, and the widespread series featuring the phrase Is Always A Good Idea applied to various locations like London, New York, and Cornwall. During the 2020 pandemic, he gained further recognition for his Keep Yer Chin Up series, which was distributed to provide hope during the lockdown.
Buonaguidi has participated in numerous high profile art shows and gallery exhibitions that have solidified his reputation among serious print collectors. He has held several solo exhibitions at Jealous Gallery including Now That’s What I Call Dave Buonaguidi and Dave Buonaguidi Is Always A Good Idea. His work has also been featured in solo shows like STAY WEIRD and High Crimes & Dirty Habits at BSMT Space in London. By combining his deep understanding of communication from his advertising days with a raw and experimental approach to printmaking, he continues to create work that resonates emotionally while remaining accessible to a broad audience of art enthusiasts.
