UK artist Nick Smith, a contemporary figure in the art world, is celebrated for his unique, signature style that deconstructs iconic imagery into vivid, pixelated collages using hundreds of custom coloured swatches. Born in Liverpool in 1982 and based in Scotland, Smith bridges the gap between fine art and popular culture, offering dual perspectives that engage viewers both from afar and up close.
From a distance, the meticulously arranged colour chips coalesce into recognizable figures and masterpieces from art history, such as Vermeer's The Milkmaid or Warhol's Marilyn. Up close, the image dissolves into abstraction, revealing text in place of paint names on each swatch, adding a rich, often narrative or provocative, layer of meaning that demands physical interaction from the audience. This technique, which evolved from his background in interior design, is explored in his "Psycolourgy" series, where he associates colours with emotions and memory.
