James Jean is a highly acclaimed Taiwanese-American artist renowned for his captivating and versatile work that seamlessly bridges the gap between commercial illustration and fine art. Born in Taiwan in 1979 and raised in New Jersey, Jean studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York and has since established himself as a prominent figure in the contemporary art world.
Upon graduating in 2001, Jean quickly made a name for himself as a prolific cover artist for DC Comics, most notably for the series Fables and The Umbrella Academy, earning multiple Eisner and Harvey Awards for his intricate and imaginative cover designs. Beyond the comics industry, his commercial clients have included Time Magazine, the New York Times, Linkin Park, Target, and Prada, the latter of which he has collaborated with on several fashion campaigns.
In 2008, Jean shifted his focus from commercial work to concentrate on painting and drawing as a fine artist. His distinctive style blends surrealistic elements, delicate linework, and vibrant colors, drawing inspiration from a wide range of sources, including Art Nouveau, Japanese woodblock prints (Ukiyo-e), and Chinese silk scroll paintings. His work, which often features dream-like narratives and fantastical creatures, is characterized by its meticulous detail and ability to evoke a sense of whimsical melancholy.
Now based in Los Angeles, James Jean exhibits his work in galleries and museums worldwide, with pieces in the permanent collection at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco and past displays at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
