D*Face, whose real name is Dean Stockton, is one of the most prominent figures in the British urban contemporary art scene. Born in London in 1978, his identity as a street artist remained largely a mystery until 2008 when he publicly revealed his name. Growing up, Stockton was heavily influenced by the 1980s American skate culture, the graphics in Thrasher magazine, and early New York City subway graffiti documented in books like Subway Art. These influences fostered a do it yourself (DIY) ethos and a unique visual language that merges pop art, punk aesthetics, and a sardonic sense of humour.
D*Face began his career in the late 1990s by creating hand drawn stickers and posters that he "sticker bombed" across the streets of London. This was a deliberate act of subverting the advertising world where he worked as a graphic designer, using the public domain as his canvas. His work is often described as "aPOPcalyptic" and is a critique of consumerism, celebrity culture, and the "American Dream". He achieves this by "defacing" well known cultural icons, such as the Queen of England or Marilyn Monroe, by adding elements of decay, like a drooling skull or wings, creating a "sweet and sugary on the surface, but with an unfamiliar, uncomfortable taste beneath" effect.
His work, which spans spray paint murals, stencils, paintings, and sculptures, can be found in major cities across the globe including New York, Tokyo, and Los Angeles. D*Face has had solo exhibitions worldwide and has collaborated with major brands and figures, including designing the album cover for Blink 182's California and David Beckham's whisky brand bottle. He also founded the influential StolenSpace Gallery in London in 2005, which has since become a hub for urban art. Today, Dean Stockton continues to be a major force in the urban art community, encouraging people to look closer at what surrounds them and question conspicuous consumption.

D*Face, born Dean Stockton in London, is a celebrated contemporary urban artist whose work bridges the worlds of street art, pop culture, and fine art. Inspired by punk, skate culture, and comic book aesthetics, Stockton developed a distinctive style characterized by bold graphics, twisted pop iconography, and biting social commentary. His moniker “D*Face” reflects his ongoing mission to challenge and “deface” mainstream imagery, exposing the contradictions of consumer culture, celebrity obsession, and political messaging.

Early in his career, D*Face became part of the street art explosion in London, often mentioned alongside Banksy. He contributed to the same movement that brought underground graffiti into the global spotlight. In fact, he was closely connected with Banksy during the rise of street art in the early 2000s, and his gallery, StolenSpace, became a key hub for this cultural shift. Stockton’s work was included in Banksy’s infamous 2015 installation Dismaland, further cementing his position among the movement’s pioneers.

Beyond murals and fine art shows, D*Face also engaged with print culture, collaborating with Handmade Posters to produce limited-edition screen prints and hand-pulled works. These prints highly sought after by collectors mirror his street practice, translating his subversive imagery into fine art editions while retaining the rebellious energy of his public work.

Over the years, D*Face has created large-scale murals around the world, from Los Angeles to Tokyo, and his gallery exhibitions push his satirical themes even further. By remixing familiar cultural icons into warped, skull-faced figures, Stockton continues to provoke reflection on consumerism and mortality, keeping the anti-establishment spirit of street art alive.
