Bisco Smith is a contemporary American artist, born on July 22, 1980, known for his dynamic style that merges a graffiti background with abstract expressionism. His work, which often uses a stark black and white palette, is characterized by powerful, gestural marks and abstracted text that capture the raw energy of a specific moment. The artist, who was originally known as the DJ and rapper "Bisc1" in the Brooklyn underground hip hop scene, views his process as a "visual freestyle" that translates the rhythms of music into a visual format. His unique approach developed in 2011 when he began writing out his goals on his apartment wall, essentially turning songwriting into painting. The resulting compositions are collections of words that are abstracted to the point of being nearly unreadable, encouraging viewers to instead appreciate the design, motion, and embedded energy.

Smith's creative journey began with skateboarding and urban tagging in the 1990s, an interest he later refined at the Pratt Institute. He often works on a variety of scales and formats, from studio canvases to large outdoor murals found in major cities worldwide. He incorporates materials like household paint and large rollers, techniques learned from his time painting illegally in abandoned buildings and on train tracks. His global reach has seen him exhibit in Tokyo, Berlin, Miami, and Hong Kong. Through his work, which embodies the coexistence of music and art, Smith aims to transmit positive intentions and inspire hope for the future.
