Anthony Hurd is a multidisciplinary self taught artist and painter originally from Kansas City Missouri who now works and resides in Albuquerque New Mexico. Raised within the skateboarding culture, Hurd began creating from a young age by crafting his own clothing, designing skateboard graphics, and playing in hardcore bands. Though he engaged in creative businesses early, his professional focus shifted to the advertising world for twenty years, acting as a VP of creative and creative director before returning to full time art approximately eight years ago. Hurd’s art focuses on themes of queer romance, identity, vulnerability, and navigating personal trauma, often portraying intimate moments through a vivid earthly color palette. His transition into fine art was a deliberate move to create the queer representation he felt was missing from his youth in the 1980s.
Significant artistic milestones for Anthony Hurd include holding a solo museum exhibition at the Brand Library and Arts Center in Los Angeles in 2023. Furthermore, Anthony Hurd has established his own space, the A. Hurd Gallery in Albuquerque which opened in April 2021. His work has gained recognition for its evolution from graphic skull paintings to poignant, intimate portraits of male figures, often exploring the intersection of queer joy and vulnerability. Hurd has officially partnered with artists and curated shows through Thinkspace Projects with whom he has shown for over a decade. In 2025, he collaborated with CODACurates to produce an officially licensed limited edition print for the twentieth anniversary of the film Brokeback Mountain.
Within his exhibition history, Anthony Hurd has participated in numerous gallery shows, including "Lovers + Fighters" at Thinkspace Projects in Los Angeles in 2025, and a solo show titled "Current Mood" in 2020. He has also exhibited work at the Lequivive Gallery in Oakland, as well as holding solo exhibitions in his own A. Hurd Gallery such as "I was born in a gay bar". Famous and notable pieces by the artist include the "Current Mood" series, "Young Love" 2021, and the 2025 "Brokeback Mountain" archival print. His work frequently explores the concept of "Dark Optimism," painting scenes that reflect on personal growth and resilience.
