About Third Eye Butterfly Mandala

In Third Eye Butterfly Mandala, Fairey and Hirst focus on the mandala, a design which has historically appeared in the work of both artists. The circular mandalas are composed of Hirst’s meticulously arranged and variously coloured images of butterfly wings, a motif that he has long used as a ‘universal trigger’ for themes of love, beauty and mortality. At the centre of the mandalas are Fairey’s Make Art Not War girl and the third eye, together communicating a message of peace and harmony.

"A mandala is a symbol of unity and wholeness and harmony for the planet. So, these pieces that are about peace and harmony are really conveyed with the materials used, the subject matter, and I think that they came together very powerfully.” – Shepard Fairey

"I love working with Shepard, he’s a great artist and a great human being and there aren’t many people around who have both those qualities never mind artists and he gives a shit more than most in a world where hope is in short supply, oh and he’s a punk!

Together we have created magical paintings that are filled with the joy of life and the power of good in the constant battle between good and evil surrounding us. Hope you feel it too." – Damien Hirst

Invader is the pseudonym of a French artist born in 1969 who has spent the past quarter century staging playful invasions of public space with ceramic mosaics inspired by 1978 arcade graphics. A graduate of the École des Beaux Arts in Paris, he moved from canvas experiments to durable bathroom tiles, cementing the first alien on a Paris wall in 1998 as a way to liberate pixel creatures from the television screen. Each miniature work is meticulously mapped to its surroundings, so a red ghost may hover above a neon bistro sign or a turquoise Space Invader may lurk beside a Baroque molding, turning the city into an open air gallery and passers by into unwitting players of his treasure hunt.

The project has grown to more than four thousand pieces across seventy nine cities, from Los Angeles to Kathmandu, and even to the International Space Station where astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti floated an alien mosaic 248 miles above Earth. Invader keeps score through an app called Flash Invaders that awards points for photographs of his works, encouraging fans to chase the hardest hidden tiles much like the original arcade challenge. Along the way he has expanded his practice into Rubikcubism sculptures made from solved cubes, large scale panels that fetch six figures at auction, and collaborations with fashion and design houses, all while maintaining anonymity behind a mask or pixelated blur. Whether installing a Hello Kitty in Tokyo, Spiderman on a Paris chimney, or planets outside the European Space Agency, Invader continues to transform urban surfaces into joyful reminders that art can hide in plain sight and that the city itself is the greatest game board of all.

____________________

Damien Hirst is a British artist whose name has become shorthand for audacious contemporary art. Born in Bristol in 1965, he grew up in Leeds and later studied at Goldsmiths, University of London, where he emerged as the leading figure of the Young British Artists movement in the late 1980s. Hirst first garnered attention with his installation “A Thousand Years,” featuring a rotting cow’s head and a life cycle of flies, setting the tone for a career that would continually probe the boundaries between life, death, beauty and commerce.
His most iconic works include the spot paintings, endless grids of brightly colored dots that question mechanical reproduction and artistic authorship, and the formaldehyde preserved sharks, sheep and calves that confront viewers with mortality in a clinical gallery setting. These pieces, often produced with the help of a large studio team, sparked debates about originality, the role of the artist and the commodification of art itself.
Hirst’s 2008 auction, “Beautiful Inside My Head Forever,” bypassed galleries and sold directly to the public, raising over £111 million and breaking records for a single-artist sale. Beyond the market, he has explored themes of belief, medicine and spirituality through installations like the diamond encrusted skull “For the Love of God,” and the monumental Venice exhibition “Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable,” which presented fabricated artifacts as if salvaged from an ancient shipwreck.
Despite critical divides, Hirst remains a cultural force, expanding into restaurants, NFTs and philanthropy while continuing to examine what it means to create, collect and confront the inevitable end.
