Sir Peter Blake is a titan within the English art movement famously known as Pop Art and remains a towering presence for collectors of limited edition art and rare gig posters. Born in 1932 in Dartford Kent, the English artist originally began his formal journey into the creative world at Gravesend Technical College where he studied from 1949 until 1951 before serving in the Royal Air Force. He later refined his craft at the prestigious Royal College of Art graduating in 1956. Sir Peter Blake rose to international fame during the late 1950s and early 1960s by bridging the gap between high culture and the vibrant energy of popular entertainment including wrestling and cinema.
One of the most significant moments in his career involved a collaboration with fellow artist and then wife Jann Haworth whom he met while they were both active in the burgeoning London art scene. Their creative relationship yielded the most famous album cover in history for the Beatles masterpiece titled Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in 1967. This specific piece solidified the reputation of Sir Peter Blake as a master of collage and a pioneer of the music related art print world. His ability to blend varied elements into a single cohesive narrative has made his work highly sought after by those who collect movie posters and concert memorabilia.
Throughout his long and prolific career Sir Peter Blake has participated in numerous landmark gallery shows and major retrospectives including significant exhibitions at Tate Britain in 1983 and Tate Liverpool in 2008. His accolades are equally impressive as he was made a Royal Academician in 1981 and received a knighthood for his services to art in 2002. For the modern collector his portfolio includes timeless pieces such as Self Portrait with Badges which is held in the Tate collection and the Live Aid concert poster which showcased his talent for graphic communication on a global scale. Other famous works include On the Balcony and his evocative 1961 painting titled The First Real Target.
While many define him through his mid century success Sir Peter Blake continues to influence the world of printmaking and fine art into what he describes as his late period. His enduring relevance is visible in his work for bands like Oasis and The Who as well as his design for the 2012 Brit Award statuette. He remains a quintessential English master whose legacy in the realm of limited edition prints and cultural icons is unmatched. Collectors frequently hunt for his unique silk screen prints and rare promotional materials which maintain high value in the secondary market due to their historical importance and distinct aesthetic.
