Renate Thor, a distinguished artist and illustrator based in Oslo, Norway, has carved a unique niche in the Scandinavian art scene through her vibrant, whimsical, and often figurative screenprints. Her professional journey into focused artistic production was solidified through rigorous academic training, beginning with a Bachelor in Graphic Design from Westerdals and culminating in a Master in Design from the Oslo National Academy of the Arts (KHiO) in 2017. Known for her playful compositions and bold color palettes, Thor effectively merges graphic sensibilities with fine art printmaking, frequently working out of Fellesverkstedet in Oslo where she also serves as a silkscreen workshop manager, producing limited edition works that appeal strongly to modern collectors.
Her significant accomplishments include high profile commissions and industry recognition, such as receiving a diploma at Visuelt 2018 for her master project pattern collection and illustration work. A major career highlight was her 2019 commission by the Nobel Peace Center to create a massive 16 meter long mural for their KlimaLab exhibition. Her portfolio is characterized by, and Thor's Instagram showcases, a mix of screenprinted posters, textile art, and, as seen on renatethor.com, notable projects like "Landskap," "Mickey," and the popular "FFF" series, which often explore shapes inspired by nature, animals, and human forms.
Thor’s participation in exhibitions and gallery shows highlights her active role in the creative community, including a feature in the opening exhibition at Deichman Bjørvika and projects shown at Skogen Art Space. She has also appeared at HeiaKlubben and exhibited at the Blank Poster Festival in Lucerne, Switzerland. Her work is frequently featured through Too Many Prints, connecting her limited edition, hand printed silkscreens directly with interior design and poster enthusiasts. With a strong focus on self produced, high quality screenprints, her artistic output continues to gain traction among those looking for bold, artistic statements for home decor.
