Mr. Tomonoshi is a multidisciplinary artist from the United States who defines himself as an "Imagitect," a term he created to describe his role in designing and manufacturing the physical and digital manifestations of his imagination. Also known as Martellus Bennett, he is a retired professional athlete who has transitioned into a prolific career as an author, illustrator, and designer. His creative practice is deeply rooted in what he calls the "Black sociological imagination" and is centered on themes of emotional inheritance, ritual, and legacy. Through his publishing house, he produces books and audio adventures that combine poetic rhythm with visionary style to build cultural infrastructure for healing and imaginative expansion.
The artistic output of Mr. Tomonoshi spans a vast array of mediums including furniture design, landscape architecture, and large scale installations. One notable project, an exhibition titled Kokoro, presented a story about a girl with flowers for hair in a dystopian mashup of Brooklyn and Tokyo. His craftsmanship often integrates traditional Japanese techniques such as Yakisugi, or charred wood, which he uses to create functional sculptures that symbolize spiritual purification and renewal. By blending narrative elegance with playful ingenuity, he invites others to interact with his personal philosophies and explores the psychological depth of identity. His work is characterized by a commitment to world building, aiming to inspire seekers to unearth meaning and wonder in simplicity.
