Mandy El-Sayegh (b. 1985, Malaysia) is a London-based artist renowned for her process-driven practice rooted in assemblage and collage. Her work explores the formation and breakdown of systems of order—be they bodily, linguistic, or political using a wide array of media including densely layered paintings, sculpture, installation, and performance.
El-Sayegh's works are visually and conceptually rich, often created by collaging disparate fragments such as newsprint, advertisements, aerial maps, and anatomy books, layered with hand-painted elements and non-traditional materials like latex and rubber. A significant personal element is the incorporation of her father's Arabic calligraphy, adding a layer of cultural and personal history to her global art form.
She physically demonstrates the relationship between the individual components and the overarching whole (the part-whole relationship) by "suturing" fragments together, often on the floor of her studio. She then applies a hand-painted grid over these elements, which simultaneously structures and obscures the underlying information, challenging the viewer to question legitimate and illegitimate readings of culture and context.
El-Sayegh received her BA from the University of Westminster in 2007 and her MA in painting from the Royal College of Art in 2009. She has had solo institutional shows at the Chisenhale Gallery in London and her work is held in the permanent collections of institutions like the Tate Modern in London and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Through her unique approach, El-Sayegh creates complex, multifaceted works that blend sociopolitical messaging with aesthetic integrity.
