Yuk Fun is an independent creative duo founded in 2014 by Lucy Cheung and Patrick Gildersleeves, who first met while studying art and design at university in Leeds. Operating from their home studio in Portslade-by-Sea near Brighton, the pair combines their individual strengths to produce a wide range of illustrated goods, including apparel, screen prints, and lifestyle accessories. Lucy Cheung primarily handles the conceptual direction and the physical construction of handmade clothing, while Patrick Gildersleeves is responsible for the intricate drawing and illustration work. Their collaboration is deeply rooted in a shared passion for bold aesthetics and the joy of making, often reflected in their choice of the name Yuk Fun, which incorporates Lucy’s Chinese middle name meaning to bring or produce.
The duo’s visual style is characterized by vibrant colors and playful characters, drawing inspiration from a diverse array of sources such as Chinese folk art, Japanese woodcuts, and mid-century packaging. They are particularly known for their commitment to traditional craft techniques, having transitioned to screen printing their own textiles to maintain total control over their color palettes and production quality. Beyond their commercial work, Lucy and Patrick use their platform to address social issues, notably leading campaigns to raise awareness and funds for charities supporting the Asian community. Their portfolio includes collaborations with major names like Adobe, Arket, and the V&A, yet they maintain a small-batch, DIY ethos that prioritizes personal connection and a sense of humor in every piece they create.
