Yuko Shimizu is a highly accomplished illustrator and educator originally from Japan, whose professional journey is marked by a notable mid-life career transition. Born in Tokyo in 1965, she spent part of her childhood in the United States before returning to Japan for university. Despite an early interest in art, she followed her parents' advice and studied business at Waseda University, subsequently spending eleven years working in corporate public relations in Tokyo. At the age of 34, she decided to pursue her creative dreams and moved to New York City to enroll in the School of Visual Arts, where she eventually earned her Master of Fine Arts in 2003.

Shimizu is often distinguished from the other famous Japanese creator with the same name who designed the Hello Kitty character for Sanrio in 1974. In contrast, the illustrator's own body of work is characterized by intricate line work and a fusion of traditional Japanese motifs with bold graphic storytelling. Her illustrations have appeared in prominent publications such as The New York Times, The New Yorker, and Time, and she has collaborated with major global brands including Nike, Apple, and Microsoft. Beyond her commercial success, she has received significant accolades, including the 2018 Hamilton King Award and multiple medals from the Society of Illustrators. Currently, she resides in New York City and continues to influence the next generation of artists as a long-standing instructor at the School of Visual Arts.
