Jay Vollmar is a Denver based artist, graphic illustrator, and thing maker whose work is deeply rooted in the tactile, often imperfect aesthetics of hand produced silkscreen printing. Hailing from the United States, Vollmar has developed a distinctive style heavily influenced by vintage rock posters, skateboard graphics, and, to a significant extent, the remnants of industrial society, including debris, failing architecture, and forgotten objects. His artistic journey began in earnest as a freelancer in June 1998, working under the moniker Jay Vollmar Art and Design, where he has honed a career combining commercial illustration with fine art. His educational background in art is foundational to his technical ability, which he uses to create screen printed posters illustrates and produces with a focus on bold simple imagery designed to tell stories.
Vollmar has achieved recognition in the limited edition art print and poster collector community through his meticulous, often gritty, and textured screen prints. His work has been recognized by prestigious publications such as Communication Arts, Print Magazine, and 3x3 Illustration. Significant accomplishments for Jay Vollmar include having his work featured in recognized industry publications, including the Art of Modern Rock and 1000 Indie Posters. He has also created poster art for major musical acts, such as a, 1.3.7 notes, screen print for Sleater Kinney for Austin City Limits.
His participation in art and gallery shows is extensive, with a focus on printmaking and urban art, as detailed on his Saatchi Art profile. Notably, he has participated in numerous Flatstock poster conventions, which are renowned in the poster collector community, including Flatstock 1 to 4 in San Francisco, Austin, and Seattle. Other significant exhibitions include, Vertigo Art Space in Denver, where he presented "Abstracts and Objects" in 2019 and "Clocked Out" in 2017. He also showcased his work at the, Ink Lounge Gallery in Denver for "Volume" in 2008 and at Revoluciones in Denver for "Screen and Destroy" in 2005.
