Hadi Falapishi is an Iranian born artist based in New York whose multidisciplinary practice challenges the traditional boundaries of photography, painting, and sculpture. He is most widely recognized for his singular technique of creating large scale photograms without the use of a camera. By manipulating flashlights and light sources directly onto light sensitive paper in total darkness, he produces whimsical yet unsettling compositions that exist at the intersection of performance and image making. His work often features a recurring cast of archetypal characters, including a human, a cat, and a dog, which serve as vessels for exploring themes of power, isolation, and domestic entrapment.
These stylized figures are frequently depicted in claustrophobic environments, such as small houses or pens, where their interactions shift between companionship and predatory aggression. This symbolic narrative framework allows the artist to investigate the complexities of social hierarchies and the inherent violence of boundaries. While the vibrant colors and childlike outlines suggest a sense of playfulness, the underlying tone is often dark and satirical. Falapishi also incorporates sculpture and installation into his exhibitions, using found objects, stuffed animals, and architectural interventions to expand his flattened photographic narratives into three dimensional space. Through his rejection of conventional photographic equipment, he emphasizes the physical gesture and the unpredictability of light. His work has been exhibited at major institutions such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, where his ability to blend personal mythology with broader social critique has established him as a significant voice in contemporary art.
