Barry McGee is an influential figure in the global art movement originating from San Francisco in the United States. He is widely recognized for his roots in the graffiti subculture, where he operated under the moniker Twist. His work transitioned from the streets to the gallery during the nineteen nineties, bridging the gap between underground urban expression and the formal art world. McGee is a central figure of the Mission School, a movement characterized by a focus on social activism and the use of found materials.
His aesthetic is defined by a distinct visual language featuring sad-eyed, weathered characters that reflect the struggles of marginalized urban populations. These figures are often surrounded by vibrant, geometric patterns and intricate linework. McGee frequently utilizes discarded objects such as empty liquor bottles, scrap metal, and surfboards as his canvases, emphasizing a connection to the discarded remnants of consumer culture. This choice of medium underscores his commitment to exploring the beauty within urban decay and the resilience of the human spirit.
In his installations, McGee often employs a technique known as clustering, where dozens of framed drawings and paintings are arranged in dense, chaotic configurations that overwhelm the viewer’s field of vision. This method mimics the visual density of a city environment, creating an immersive experience that challenges traditional notions of curated space. Through his multifaceted practice, he remains a pivotal voice in exploring the intersections of public and private space while maintaining a deep respect for the history of folk art and street culture.
