Twin brothers Otavio Pandolfo and Gustavo Pandolfo comprise the world renowned artistic duo known as Os Gemeos. Born and raised in Sao Paulo, Brazil, these artists have redefined the landscape of urban expression through a unique visual language that blends Brazilian folklore with global hip hop culture. Their pseudonym translates to The Twins in Portuguese, a moniker that perfectly encapsulates their symbiotic creative process where they often finish each others sentences and brushstrokes. The brothers first began focusing on art during the mid nineteen eighties as the burgeoning breakdance and graffiti movements took hold of their neighborhood in Cambuci. This period was pivotal as they lacked access to traditional spray paint and instead improvised with automotive paint and unconventional rollers, a necessity that birthed their signature thin line work and intricate detailing.
While many urban artists come from formal academic backgrounds, Os Gemeos are largely self taught figures who honed their craft on the streets rather than inside a classroom. Their education was the vibrant, chaotic environment of Sao Paulo, though they eventually attended the Escola Panamericana de Arte to refine certain technical aspects of design. This lack of rigid institutional influence allowed them to develop a dreamlike universe known as Tritrez, populated by yellow skinned characters with elongated limbs and patterned clothing. These characters serve as a bridge between the physical world and the subconscious, reflecting the diverse racial and cultural tapestry of Brazil. For the dedicated art print and poster collector, their work represents a rare intersection of raw street energy and sophisticated folkloric storytelling.
The duo has achieved numerous significant accomplishments that have elevated them to the pinnacle of the global art market. One of their most recognizable large scale feats occurred in two thousand fourteen when they painted the official Boeing seven hundred thirty seven aircraft for the Brazilian national soccer team during the World Cup. Beyond the streets, they have successfully transitioned into prestigious institutional spaces. They have held major solo exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. While their roots are in the ephemeral world of graffiti, Os Gemeos have mastered the transition to high end gallery settings, making their limited edition lithographs and screen prints some of the most sought after items in the secondary collector market.
Significant gallery shows and public installations have further cemented their legacy. Notable exhibitions include Vertigem at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil and their massive mural project for the Vancouver Biennale where they transformed six industrial silos into towering giants. Collectors often hunt for pieces that reference their most famous works such as the mural at Dewey Square in Boston titled The Giant or the whimsical installation known as The Piano. Their participation in the iconic Art Basel Miami beach events and shows at the Lehmann Maupin gallery have ensured that their influence remains global. By blending social commentary with a playful, surrealist aesthetic, the brothers continue to inspire a generation of print enthusiasts and muralists alike.
