____________

Mickalene Thomas is a renowned American visual artist born in Camden New Jersey in 1971 who creates elaborate paintings composed of rhinestones, acrylic, and enamel to challenge conventional representations of Black women. Raised by her mother Sandra Bush, who modeled in the 1970s, Thomas was exposed to fashion and art early, heavily influencing her aesthetic, which often references 1970s culture and art historical themes. While she initially focused on prelaw and theater arts at Portland State University, she shifted her focus to art after engaging with the creative community there and seeing Carrie Mae Weems work. She earned her BFA in painting from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and her MFA in painting from the Yale University School of Art.
As a creator of monumental mixed media works, Mickalene Thomas' art explores the complexities of Black female identity through portraiture, landscape, and interior scenes. A significant accomplishment was being the first artist to paint an individual portrait of First Lady Michelle Obama, which was displayed at the National Portrait Gallery. Other major achievements include her first solo museum exhibition, “Origin of the Universe,” at the Brooklyn Museum and the 2025/2026 touring retrospective "All About Love," which made her the first African American artist to have a major solo exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris.
She has participated in numerous acclaimed solo and gallery exhibitions, including "Do I Look Like a Lady?" at MOCA Grand Avenue in Chicago. Her work is included in public collections at the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Guggenheim Museum
