Born in 1963 in Lyon France, Xavier Veilhan has established himself as a major figure in visual arts through a diverse body of work spanning sculpture, installation, painting, film, and photography. Based in Paris, his artistic focus solidified in the late 1980s, driven by an interest in blending classical statuary with modern industrial processes, technology, and often utilizes 3D capture and faceted, geometric forms to question perception. His educational background includes studies at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the University of Arts in Berlin under Georg Baselitz, and the Institut des Hautes Études en Arts Plastiques. Veilhan is renowned for his "bestiary" of animal sculptures, stylized human portraits, and mechanical objects, frequently exploring movement, speed, and spatial relationships.
Significant accomplishments marking his career include the 2009 site specific installation Veilhan Versailles at the Palace of Versailles, and the Architectones series (2012–2014), which involved interventions in iconic modernist buildings worldwide. A pivotal moment was representing France at the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017, where he transformed the French Pavilion into Studio Venezia, a functional recording studio. He has also created major public commissions, such as Vårbergs Jättar in Sweden and various sculptures in cities like New York and Shanghai. In 2022, he became the first artist invited by CHANEL to design a haute couture runway setting. Famous pieces include Le Requin (The Shark)Le Lion, and his stylized portraits.
Xavier Veilhan has held extensive gallery shows and museum exhibitions globally, represented by major venues like PerrotinAndréhnSchiptjenko, and Galeria Nara Roesler. Notable exhibitions include retrospectives at the Centre Pompidou and presentations at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Geneva. His work continues to bridge industrial aesthetics with art, often turning viewers into active participants in an evolving space.
