André Saraiva, widely recognized in the global street art and poster collector community by his moniker Mr A, is a pioneering figure whose work redefined urban iconography. Born in 1971 in Uppsala, Sweden, to Portuguese parents, Saraiva moved to Paris at the age of ten and quickly became an integral part of the early French graffiti scene. He began his artistic journey on the streets in the mid 1980s, eventually shifting away from traditional letter based tagging to focus on character driven art. By 1989, he had fully introduced the world to Mr A, a dapper, long legged figure wearing a top hat with a signature winking eye and a broad grin. This character became a ubiquitous presence across six continents and served as one of the first major examples of a logo based signature in the graffiti world.
While André Saraiva did not follow a conventional path of formal academic training in fine arts, his education was rooted in the gritty, hands on environment of the Parisian underground. His father was a painter, providing an early familial influence on his creative development. The artist eventually transitioned from illegal street works to prestigious institutional recognition. A significant accomplishment in his early career was winning a competition organized by the French magazine L’Express in 1989, which featured his work on its cover. His influence further expanded when he appeared in the 2010 documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop, directed by Banksy, cementing his status as a key figure in the evolution of street culture.
Collectors of limited edition art prints and posters frequently seek his works due to their vibrant, playful nature and their historical weight within the movement. His portfolio includes famous pieces such as the Andrépolis installation, a miniature neon city resembling a hybrid of Paris and New York, and the Love Graffiti series, where he painted commissioned names of lovers in bold colors on city walls. Other notable works include the Dream Concerts posters, which depict imaginary concert lineups, and standalone series such as Mr A Kiss and various limited screenprints like Amour Toujours.
André Saraiva has participated in numerous high profile exhibitions throughout his career. He was a featured artist in the landmark Art in the Streets exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles in 2011. That same year, his work was showcased at the Grand Palais in Paris and the 54th Venice Biennale. In 2014, a major solo retrospective was held at the Museu do Design e da Moda in Lisbon. He continues to exhibit in esteemed venues globally, including the Allouche Gallery in New York and the Danysz Gallery in Paris, ensuring his lasting legacy among fine art collectors and the international urban art community.
