Olaoluwa Slawn Akeredolu-Ale, better known as Olaolu Slawn, is a Nigerian artist and designer whose meteoric rise has blurred the boundaries between street culture and high art. Born in 2000 in Lagos, Nigeria, he initially found his creative footing within the city's first skate shop, WAFFLESNCREAM, where he eventually became a creative director. He co-founded the influential streetwear collective Motherlan, which garnered attention from major industry figures like the late Virgil Abloh. After relocating to London in 2018 to study graphic design, he pivoted to painting during the 2020 lockdowns, developing a signature style defined by bold caricatures, graffiti-inspired linework, and vibrant spray paint on large-scale canvases.
His work often explores complex themes such as racial identity, human psychology, and political conflict, frequently incorporating playful yet provocative imagery rooted in his Yoruba heritage. Despite his self-effacing claim that he is not a traditional artist, Olaolu Slawn has achieved remarkable commercial and institutional success. In 2023, he made history as the youngest person to design the Britannia statuette for the BRIT Awards, and in 2024, he became the first artist to officially redesign the FA Cup trophy. His high-profile collaborations extend to brands like Rolex, Louis Vuitton, and Nike, while his auctions at Sotheby's have seen his works fetch tens of thousands of pounds. Beyond the canvas, he maintains a community presence through BeauBeau’s Cafe in East London, serving as a hub for his multifaceted creative output.
