Blek le Rat, born Xavier Prou in 1951, is a pioneering figure in the global street art movement. He is originally from France and began his creative journey in Paris during the early 1980s. Influenced by the burgeoning graffiti scene in New York City, he sought to create a unique visual language that resonated with the European urban landscape. He is widely credited with inventing the life-sized stencil graffiti technique, a method he chose to distinguish his work from the stylized lettering prevalent in American hip-hop culture. His choice of the pseudonym Blek le Rat was inspired by the Italian comic book character Blek le Roc, while the rat served as an anagram for art and symbolized the pervasive, indestructible nature of creativity within a city.

His early work often featured small black rats scuttling along the walls of Paris, which he described as the only free animal in the city. As his style evolved, he began painting larger human figures, often depicting iconic characters, homeless individuals, or classical art figures.
